Dog Clippers for Grooming: Which Coats Need Them and Which Must Never Be Shaved

Dog clippers for grooming belong in the drawer of about half of dog owners and nowhere near the other half. Coats that grow continuously need cutting. Coats that shed need brushing. Buying clippers for a husky is the most expensive grooming mistake there is, because the coat that grows back is worse than the one you removed.

Which Dogs Need Clippers for Grooming?

Single-coated breeds whose hair keeps growing: poodles, doodles, bichons, shih tzus, maltese, wheaten terriers, and most wire-coated terriers. Their hair behaves like human hair — it lengthens until cut, mats when it lengthens, and never sheds out. Skipping clipping on these coats means a full-body mat within months.

Which Coats Should Never Be Shaved?

Double-coated breeds — huskies, malamutes, shepherds, retrievers, corgis, pomeranians. Shaving removes the guard coat that reflects heat and blocks sun, while the soft undercoat regrows first and faster. The dog ends up hotter, sunburn-prone, and the texture often never recovers. Rake the undercoat out instead; the coat is the cooling system, not the problem.

What Blade or Guard Length Should You Use at Home?

Start long. A #10 blade with a half-inch comb guard leaves enough coat to hide uneven work, and you can always take more off. Bare blades against skin are how home groomers cause clipper burn, especially on the belly, armpits and behind the ears where skin folds.

Why Do Clippers Pull Instead of Cut?

Three causes, in order: a dirty coat, a dull blade, or a wet coat. Clip dry and clean, always. Dirt blunts a blade within one groom. If the clipper drags, stop and check blade temperature against your wrist — a hot blade burns skin before you notice the dog reacting.

How Do You Clip a Matted Dog?

You do not clip over mats — you clip under them, with a short blade, lifting the mat away from the skin. Never try to cut mats out with scissors; the skin tents up into the blade. Matting is also a skin risk on its own: Cornell’s canine health specialists note that any matted areas will hold moisture next to the skin, making dogs at risk for infections and sores. A badly matted dog is a groomer visit, not a first project.

What Should You Buy?

  • Professional Rechargeable Pet Trimmer — full-body work, longest runtime
  • Pet Hair Trimmer and Grooming Kit — clipper plus guards and comb in one box
  • Paw Trimmer with LED Light — small head for paw pads, face and sanitary areas
  • LED-Lit Pet Grooming Trimmer — quiet, low-vibration for anxious dogs

Clippers are one part of the dog grooming kit. Full range in Grooming.

Should You Clip Paw Pads and Sanitary Areas?

Yes, and these are the two trims worth learning even if you never touch the body coat. Hair growing between the pads makes dogs slip on hard floors and collects ice and burrs. Sanitary trimming keeps faeces out of the coat on longhaired dogs. Both need a small quiet trimmer, not a full-size clipper.

FAQ

How often do clipped breeds need a haircut?

Every six to eight weeks, with brushing between. Going longer is what turns a trim into a shave-down.

Do clippers cut a dog’s skin?

Not usually by cutting — by burning. Blades heat with use, so test temperature often and keep a second blade to swap in.

Corded or cordless?

Cordless for small dogs and touch-ups, corded for full grooms on large or thick coats where battery sag slows the blade mid-job.

Can I use human hair clippers on a dog?

No. They are geared for finer hair and stall in dog coat, which causes heat and pulling.

How do I keep the dog still?

Short sessions, non-slip surface, and split the groom across two days. A body on Saturday and legs on Sunday is a normal home approach.

How do I maintain the blades?

Brush hair off and oil after every use. Dry blades dull in a handful of grooms.
