Before you get a pet — preparation guides and checklists covering what to buy, what to set up, and what to decide before a puppy or kitten arrives.
Most of the difficult first week is decided beforehand. Agree the house rules with everyone in the household before collection day — whether the sofa is allowed, who does the morning routine, where the animal sleeps. Changing those rules later is far harder than setting them once, because the animal has already learned the first version.
Prepare the physical space too: a confined settling area rather than free run of the house, food and water bowls, a bed, a crate or pen, and basic grooming tools. A new animal given the whole house on day one is overwhelmed, not liberated, and toilet training becomes much slower.
