A bird cage should be wider than it is tall. Birds fly horizontally, not vertically, so length gives usable flight space while extra height mostly goes unused. Bar spacing matters more than overall size: too wide and a small bird gets its head through, which is a genuine hazard rather than a theoretical one. Budgies and cockatiels need roughly 1.2cm spacing, larger parrots up to 2.5cm.
