Dog Agility Equipment: Starting at Home Without Hurting Joints

Border collie clearing a low jump in a garden set of dog agility equipment

Dog agility equipment turns a garden into twenty minutes of work that tires a dog more than an hour’s walk. It also puts repeated impact through shoulders and wrists, which is why jump height and surface matter more than the number of obstacles. Set up badly it is a physiotherapy bill; set up well it is the best enrichment most dogs get.

What Dog Agility Equipment Do You Need to Start?

Three pieces: an adjustable jump, a tunnel, and weave poles. That covers the three skill types — obstacle commitment, directional handling and body awareness — and everything else is a variation. Adjustable height is the single most important feature, because a fixed-height jump is either too low to be interesting or too high to be safe.

How High Should the Jumps Be?

Start with the bar on the ground and raise it only once the dog is taking it in stride without hesitation. For general home fitness, keep it at or below elbow height — full competition heights are for conditioned dogs under supervision. Puppies under 12–18 months should not jump at height at all while growth plates are open.

Which Dogs Should Not Do Agility?

Puppies still growing, dogs with diagnosed joint disease, very overweight dogs until they have lost condition, and flat-faced breeds that overheat quickly under sustained exertion. Long-backed breeds such as dachshunds and corgis should work tunnels and weaves but generally skip jumping entirely.

Why Does Agility Tire a Dog So Effectively?

Because it is mental and physical at once. The ASPCA notes that dogs need cognitive challenge alongside exercise, and that training exercises that build skills progressively are among the best ways to prevent boredom and destructive behaviour. A dog working out where to go next is burning far more than one trotting beside you.

What Surface Should You Run On?

Grass or matting. Concrete, paving and tile all remove traction and push impact straight up the leg, and a dog that slips on a landing once often loses confidence in the obstacle for weeks. Wet grass is also slippery — if the dog is skidding on turns, stop and train obstacle skills at walking pace instead.

How Long Should a Session Last?

Ten to twenty minutes with real breaks, two or three times a week. Agility is high-intensity work, and dogs do not self-limit when they are enjoying themselves — the dog will keep going well past the point its joints should. Warm up with two minutes of walking and finish before the dog slows down.

FAQ

What age can a dog start agility?

Foundation work — tunnels, flat poles, body awareness — from puppyhood. Jumping at height waits until growth plates close, usually 12–18 months.

Can I use household objects instead?

For tunnels and weaves yes. Improvised jumps that do not knock down are a leg-injury risk — the bar must fall.

How much space do I need?

Enough for a straight approach and a straight landing to each obstacle. Three obstacles in a small garden is realistic.

Is agility good for reactive dogs?

Often very good, at home and away from other dogs. Class environments can be too much at first.

My dog refuses the tunnel — what now?

Shorten it right down, have someone hold the dog, and call from the far end. Lengthen once it runs through happily.

Do weave poles need to be spaced exactly?

For competition yes. For fitness, wide spacing is easier on the spine and still builds coordination.
