Aquarium LED Light: Photoperiod, Brightness and Why Timers Beat Willpower

An aquarium LED light is the single easiest lever on algae, and the one most owners never touch. Light duration and intensity decide how much algae grows, whether plants thrive, and whether fish get the dark rest period they need. A timer costs less than a bottle of algaecide and works permanently.

How Many Hours Should an Aquarium LED Light Run?

Eight hours a day for a fish-only tank, eight to ten for a planted one. Longer photoperiods do not make plants grow faster past a point — they mainly feed algae. Fish need a genuine dark period too, and a tank lit whenever someone is in the room never provides one.

Is Brighter Always Better?

No. Intensity has to match what is in the tank. High output over a tank with few plants means surplus light with no one consuming the nutrients, which is the standard recipe for green spot algae. Dimmable units let you match output to the setup and raise it as planting fills in.

Do Fish-Only Tanks Need a Light at All?

Only for viewing and for a day-night rhythm. Fish do not need horticultural intensity — a low output unit on a timer is enough, and it is the cheaper way to avoid algae. If you never plan to keep live plants, buy for colour rendering rather than PAR figures.

What Colour Temperature Should You Pick?

Around 6500K looks natural and suits plants. Warmer tints wash out blues and greens; heavily blue-shifted lighting sold for marine tanks makes freshwater fish look artificial and tends to drive algae. Units with adjustable channels let you tune it once and leave it alone.

Does Lighting Affect Water Quality?

Indirectly but significantly. Plants produce oxygen under light and consume it in darkness, so dissolved oxygen reaches its daily low in the early hours. UF/IFAS puts the working target for fish at 5 mg/L or higher, with distress between 2 and 4 mg/L — which is why a heavily planted tank benefits from aeration running overnight.

What Should You Buy?

  • LED Light Timer and Dimmer — timer and brightness control in one, the single best upgrade
  • USB Clip-On Aquarium Lamp — adds light to a tank that came without one
  • Compact Aquascape Tank with Adjustable LED Lighting — tank and tunable lighting together
  • Compact LED Fish Tank with Back Filter — integrated light and filtration

See the small fish tank guide and the algae control guide, or browse Fish & Aquatic Pets.

Should the Light Fade In and Out?

If the unit offers it, yes. An abrupt switch-on in a dark room startles fish into darting, and repeated startle responses are a low-level stressor. A ramp over 15–30 minutes mimics dawn and dusk and costs nothing once the feature is there.

FAQ

Can I leave the aquarium light on all day?

No. It drives algae and denies fish a rest period. Eight hours on a timer is the default.

Do LEDs get hot enough to warm the water?

Barely, in a normal tank. They run far cooler than the fluorescent tubes they replaced.

Is a blue night light a good idea?

Mostly for people. Fish rest better in genuine darkness, and constant blue light disrupts the cycle.

How long do aquarium LEDs last?

Years, but output dims gradually. Planted tanks notice the drop before fish-only tanks do.

Will more light make plants grow faster?

Only until another factor limits them — usually CO2 or nutrients. Past that, extra light feeds algae instead.

My fish hide when the light comes on — normal?

Common with a sudden switch-on. Add a ramp or dim the unit, and give the tank shaded cover.
