A dog bandana is the one accessory almost every dog tolerates. No leg holes, nothing over the chest, nothing near the face — which is why it is the standard recommendation for dogs that refuse a full outfit. The two things worth getting right are how it fastens and how quickly it dries.
Slip-on styles thread onto the existing collar, so the bandana cannot tighten on its own and comes off whenever the collar does. Tie-on squares are adjustable to any neck and easier to layer, but a knot can work tighter through the day as the dog moves. For dogs left in one unsupervised, slip-on is the safer mechanism.
Two fingers between the fabric and the neck, sitting where the collar sits rather than high on the throat. It should not creep up toward the ears when the dog lowers its head to sniff. Long-coated dogs need a check under the fabric after the first wear — that is where matting starts.
Because fabric held against skin traps moisture, and moisture against skin under a coat is what causes trouble. Cornell’s canine specialists note that any matted areas will hold moisture next to the skin, making dogs at risk for infections and sores. Take a bandana off after rain, swimming, or a long drink.
Dogs that chew fabric off each other, heavy droolers in thin cotton, and any dog that scratches at its neck once it is on. Puppies in a chewing phase should only wear one supervised — a swallowed bandana is an obstruction, and the tie-on style is the one that comes loose.
Three genuine jobs beyond looks. It signals something about the dog to people who approach — “nervous”, “adopt me”, “in training”. It is the low-stress alternative when a costume is too much. And a light-coloured or reflective one adds a little visibility on a dim pavement.

For the slip-on style that threads onto the collar, see the dog bandana collar guide. For first-wear training and growth sizing, see puppy bandanas. For the winter version and what it does not do for warmth, see dog scarves. And when a full outfit is too much for the dog, see dog costumes.
Weekly with regular wear, immediately after rain or mud. Bandanas sit exactly where a dog’s neck skin oils collect, and an unwashed one held against that skin is a low-grade irritant. Cold wash, air dry — heat shrinks cotton enough to change the fit on a knot you had already sized.

No. It carries no ID and no attachment point. It goes over the collar, not instead of it.
Better not. Unsupervised fabric around a neck can snag on crate bars or furniture.
Measure the neck where the collar sits. Slip-on styles are sized to collar width as well as neck.
Some tolerate them. Use a breakaway collar underneath so the whole thing releases under pressure.
Only if left damp or unwashed. Check underneath after the first few wears.
Many facilities remove them, since dogs pull at each other’s. Check their policy.
